Learn to Swim with Eastleigh and Oaklands

About Us:
The Learn to Swim programme has developed in recent years in line with the ASA National Plan for Teaching Swimming (NPTS). This is an 'all inclusive programme' taking the non-swimmer from his or her first splash to developing confidence and competence in the water. The learn to swim programme aims to emphasise quality in stroke execution; to establish a situation whereby all children learn how to dive effectively; to have some awareness of other disciplines in which they might participate and to enhance their understanding of the benefits which swimming can add in terms of a healthy lifestyle.

Children are accepted from age 4 from complete beginners through to improvers, with fast track entry into the competitive part of Eastleigh and Oaklands Swimming Club for those displaying the potential and enthusiasm to succeed. All sessions are instructed by ASA qualified teachers, with lesson assistants from the swimming club who are able to offer support to the teachers and swimmers. Lessons are run with a maximum of 8 swimmers per class.

The sessions take place at two venues:

Fleming Park Leisure Centre:

Monday 6.30pm  levels 1-6
Friday   7.00pm  levels 1-6
Friday   7.30pm  levels 1-6
Sunday 7.00pm  levels 1-6
Sunday 7.30pm  levels 1-6

ASA National Plan for Teaching Swimming

Level 1 - Non Swimmer -
covering the initial process of introducing those with no previous experience of swimming to the new water environment, developing confidence and being at ease in the water.

Level 2 - Beginner - shifting the focus from initial confidence, to building a sound foundation in those aspects of “watermanship” which later underpin the performance of sound swimming technique, as well as becoming completely “at home” on and under the water.

Level 3 - Improver 1 - building competence in the basic elements of propulsion, using the main swimming strokes with a continuing emphasis on the importance of good streamlining and breathing control.

Level 4 - Improver 2 - consolidation of the aquatic skills along with controlled breathing, so that pupils can swim competently, using correct basic techniques on three of the main strokes over the standard distance of 25 metres and on Butterfly over 10 metres.

Level 5 - Advanced 1 - progression to the development of more efficient swimming as well as providing for the development of a greater awareness and expertise in personal water safety and survival swimming.

Level 6 - Advanced 2 - further development of the main swimming strokes, introducing the early stages of training in competitive swimming and providing a basis for swimming as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Level 7 - Pre-competition development - This level lays the foundation required to prepare young swimmers to take part in the developmental coaching and training programmes run by the swimming club in preparation for taking part in competitions.
