Top Training Tips - for swimmers
- Attend as many training sessions as possible each week and come prepared with all the right equipment.
- Arrive in plenty of time for your session so you can complete at least five minutes of quality land warming up and stretching.
- Listen carefully to your coaches. They are trying very hard to help you become the best possible swimmer.
- Use the pace clock. Try to time all your swims and make sure rest intervals are exactly as indicated by the coaches.
- Make sure you swim at the speed the coach asks for, ensuring your turns are performed fast and correctly. Cheating is not for winners!
- Concentrate on your stroke technique, thinking about the points your coaches have mentioned. Good swimmers have the ability to concentrate on what their hands and legs are doing.
- Drink plenty of fluids in training to ensure that you do not become dehydrated.
- Enjoy your training sessions. When you get out of the pool at the end you should feel pleased with yourself because you know you have done your best.
- Swimming training is like having a bank account. If you put in lots of effort you will have a great deal to draw out when you are in an important race.
- If you want to achieve your full potential your training in the pool needs to be supplemented with land training work. This will make you stronger, will make your heart and lungs work more efficiently, and improve both your flexibility and your endurance.
- Always have an aim. Decide upon short and long term goals so you will always have an aim for your training.
- Finally, if you don't understand why you are doing a particular set, ask the coach to explain its benefits to you.
Top Training Tips - for parents & guardians
- As a general rule, we expect swimmers to increase the number of sessions they attend as they move into more senior squads.
- Please make every effort to bring your child to the pool no later than 10 minutes prior to the start of the session to allow time for warm up and any announcements.
- Swimmers will be required to bring training equipment to all sessions.
- If your child will be out of the water over a long period of time due to injury or illness please notify your coach.
Remember to check the noticeboards for changes or additions to practice sessions.
